The Wines

PINOT GRIS 2011. $12 / 6 for $60 / 12 for $110

PINOT GRIS 2011. $12 / 6 for $60 / 12 for $110

This Pinot Gris is from a tiny private vineyard in the Main Ridge region of the Mornington Peninsular.  Made by top wine maker Richard McIntyre at Moorooduc Wines, this is a superb example of an increasingly popular grape variety.

Fragrant nose of citrus and pear.  The palate immediately shows good mouth-feel, with some viscosity.  Pear, lemon and almond on the palate are nicely complimented by a refreshing streak of acidity.  This is the opposite of the “thin and watery” Pinot Grigio filling the shelves of wine stores…  Drink 2013-16

ROSE 2010. $12 / 6 for $60 / 12 for $110

ROSE 2010. $12 / 6 for $60 / 12 for $110

Sourced from a small vineyard near Clunes, this Rose was produced using the saginee method, using very high quality Shiraz fruit.  Made by an experienced winemaker, it is clear that this is not your mass produced boring Rose!

A beautiful salmon pink colour is supported by an intense nose of strawberries.  On the palate the lively fruit continues, with a little red cherry coming through.  Essentially dry, but holding a little fruit sweetness, this is a refreshing Rose ideal for warm summer evenings.   Drink 2013-14

PINOT NOIR 2011. $15 / 6 for $85 / 12 for $160

PINOT NOIR 2011. $15 / 6 for $85 / 12 for $160

The Pinot comes from the highest vineyard on the Mornington Peninsular, and next door to the most famous producer (Main Ridge Estate, who charges $65+/bt!).  Made by Richard McIntyre at Moorooduc wines, this is a very classy wine showcasing the real quality of single vineyard Mornington Pinot.

Very light red, with a nose of strawberry and spice.  Still young on the palate, this wine has great freshness and power.  Currently dominated by red fruits (strawberries and raspberries) and supported by excellent acidity, this wine is good for drinking now, but will age excellently.  A wine for every occasion.  Drink 2013-18

SHIRAZ 2009. $12 / 6 for $60 / 12 for $110

SHIRAZ 2009. $12 / 6 for $60 / 12 for $110

From a privately owned vineyard in Elphinstone, near Ballarat, this is one of the smallest production wines you will ever see (less than 100 cases).  Made by an experienced winemaker, this wine should be everyone’s “house red”!

“It is clear immediately that this is a “proper Aussie red”!  Deep purple in colour, with a heady nose of ripe red fruits.  The heatwave in 2009 is clear in this wine; on the palate it is immensely fruity, with plums, blackberries and dark cherries.  Yet, the alcohol is well in check, and there is sufficient acidity to provide balance.   Drink 2013-15

About Bushranger

38058-1920x1080Bushranger wines has one key aim: to provide boutique quality wines at mass brand prices.  To do this, I search for small pockets of wine (sometimes as little as 5 cases) from tiny producers across Australia.  I look for well made, varietally pure, modern, high quality wines that I am happy drinking, and would be happy paying twice the price for.  These wines don’t taste like your regular $15 bottle from your local booze shop because they are not made in the same way: the vines are hand-tended, the fruit hand picked and sorted, the wines made by hand in tiny cellars.

I look to retail the wines between $10 and $15, and am able to do this as I don’t have the overheads of renting, lighting, heating and staffing a shop.  When tasting the wines for purchase, I blind taste against a well-regarded wine twice the price from the same region, and only buy if the Bushranger wine stands up against it.

I am always happy to hear people’s comments on my wines, and would be delighted to hear from small winemakers who want to work with me.  I do this because I enjoy it; I hope others enjoy Bushranger wines too!
